Excitement was building across Tasmania’s breeding industry following the arrival of Group 1 Australian Derby winner Levendi, with respected racing journalist Peter Staples describing him as a “Top Stallion for Tassie” in The Mercury.
Fresh from retirement and standing his first season at stud, Levendi arrived with credentials rarely seen in Tasmania. By Champion Sire Pierro and from the outstanding Redoute’s Choice mare Lipari, he brought an elite combination of race performance, pedigree and commercial appeal.
A winner from 1200 metres through to 2400 metres, Levendi had already established himself as one of the most versatile and accomplished racehorses of his generation. His victories in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes, Group 2 Tulloch Stakes and Group 1 ATC Australian Derby showcased both speed and stamina, while his unbeaten juvenile victory hinted at the natural ability that would follow.
The arrival of a horse of Levendi’s calibre generated considerable interest among breeders, owners and racing enthusiasts throughout the state. Many saw his presence as an opportunity to strengthen the Tasmanian breeding industry and provide access to bloodlines normally found in larger mainland breeding centres.
Trainer Manny Gelagotis expressed confidence in Levendi’s future at stud, describing him as a horse bred to be a star and one who had already proven himself at the highest level.
As the 2021 breeding season approached, anticipation continued to grow around what Levendi could achieve in the next chapter of his career.
Looking back today, that excitement was well founded. Levendi quickly became a much-loved member of the Magnum Park family, and his influence continues through his progeny and the legacy he leaves behind.
